Position:Home>Performing Arts> I'm a tenor in a collegiate acapella group. How can I hit the high notes bet

Question:I can use lots of air throughout my range and carry good tone and vibrato, but when the notes get up high (G and A range)... I can't figure out how to keep the air flowing with vibrato like the rest of my range with a strong sound. It's like a tense up, but I know I can do it because my voice teachers have helped me do it before.

Any help, advice, or techniques to develop a consistant high range are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Open the back of your throat and keep your tongue as close to the bottom of your mouth as possible. Pretend like you're holding a very fragile egg in your mouth and you don't want to break it. The notes will just stream out with ease. You can practice in front of a mirror, it will really help.

It seems to me that playing a musical instrument, like a clarinet or saxophone would strengthen your lung capacity. My son had terrible asthma until he got a sax.

look up sam cooke. listen to how he goes in and out of his notes. listen to how he can flex it both high and low. he was special so dont get upset if you cant do what he did but hes what a true vocal artist sounds like. songs like "lost and lookin' " and "a change gone come" will give you an idea.

Breath control is very important. If you want to hit a high note, make sure you have sufficient air in your diaphragm.

Not sure what you mean by "more breath," but you can try doing scales. Scales and breathing exercises are great. A good practice is singing "C" hitting the octave and running down the scale.
(C - C(octave) - B - A - G - F - E - D - C)

Also, try taking in a deep breath and then holding it. put your palm on your diaphragm and apply medium pressure as you exhale slowly with a small opening in your mouth.

My voice teacher just showed me this. When the note starts to get tight, visualize pushing the sound outward from your nose. I hit E above high C, as a note, not a squeak! Good luck.
