Position:Home>Performing Arts> How would someone start thier carer as a comedian?

Question:You would start by finding an "open-mic" comedy night in your area. Check the entertainment section of your newspaper and call your local comedy clubs to find out where they are held. When you find out where they are at, go to one and see what kind of rules they have. Have about five to ten minutes of material prepared and go the following week and give it your best shot. Exchange information with as many comedians as possible. They should let you know about more open-mics/contests/gigs where you can perform. Eventually, if another comedian likes your material, they will invite you to perform at a paying gig.

Tape your comedy whenever possible, and write new jokes whenever you can. Keep your material that works and edit or drop the jokes that don't. Get your own website, and have business cards made with your website, your email address and your phone number.

Stand up comedy is extremely competitive, and you need a thick skin to be able to keep going despite the number of times you bomb, and the number of times you get rejected. It usually takes many years before you can quit your day job and do comedy for a living.

Tell jokes, lots of jokes, and audition at comedy clubs like Yuk Yuks.

Practice...creat routines, then practice infront of family and friends until you have it down perfect then try to get gigs around your town and even after this keep practicing.
