Strat is short for Stratocaster it is an electric guitar made by Fender. It is one of the most popular and most widely recognized guitars in the entire world. Many famous people such as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn are known for playing Strats. Price ranges start at $300 and go to $3000. They are relatively high quality guitars and are great for both recording and playing live as they are extremely versital but are most common for rock music.

Usually, a Strat refers to a Fender guituar (brand/maker) Stratocaster (model) originally designed in teh 1950's.
There are fakes out there, so look for labels of makers.
they are still being made, and are a rock favorite.
I would ask who the maker is.

"Strat guitar" is commonly used for guitars that looks basicly like in the link below, but it doesn't define a brand. Watch out for cheap imitations! The most notable electric guitar brands are Fender, Peavey, Gibson, Dean, Ibanez, Epiphone or Yamaha.

Good luck!

A Strat is the shortened version for Fender's Stratocaster, a solid-body electric guitar having two or three pickups that originated in the 1950s by Les Paul.

A Strat is a short name for a Fender Stratocaster. Very good guitar if it is made in USA.

It's the nickname for the Fender Stratocaster, a model of guitar introduced in the 1950s.

The first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar was the Fender Telecaster, which is still being made. Fender introduced the Stratocaster a few years later as the Telecaster's classier cousin. It, too, is still being made and has become an icon of 20th century design and engineering, which is kind of ironic because Leo Fender, who designed it, couldn't even play the guitar.

Anyone who says that only USA-made Fenders are any good doesn't know what he is talking about. Fender also make guitars in Mexico and Japan - I have a Mexican Fender Telecaster, and it's a great guitar.

More confusingly, 'Strat' has become the nickname for any guitar that has roughly the same-shaped body as a Fender Stratocaster. Many of these guitars are cheap and crappy knockoffs, and should be avoided. If the guitar is listed as being either a 'Fender' or a 'Squier' (Squier are Fender's Japan-made budget line and are not bad guitars), then it should be ok. If no manufacturer's name is given - what can I say? Beware.

It's the guitar Jimi Hendrix used. Buddy Holly, too. Honestly, there isn't a whole more you need to know. But for auction purposes, it it came with an amp it might be a "Squire" which is Fender's entry level guitar. A kid or a novice would be just thrilled with it. Hope its for a good cause.
