One of my old friends--a self-taught guitarist--had carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists last summer.

Why? Probably in part because nobody ever corrected her bad habits in guitar-playing.

A beginner will NOT do everything right, and should not be expected to. A good teacher will catch your mistakes and correct them before they spoil your potential or create repetitive motion injuries.

A dozen or so lessons ought to be enough to give you the fundamentals, if you're serious. After that, if you don't mind taking longer, you can learn on your own from whatever resources you can access--all books, cds, dvds, webs, fellow guitarists, and Guitar Player magazine are useful.

To find a good teacher, first option is to put a note on the bulletin board at the music department of a nearby college--guitar majors know their stuff and they will work cheaper. If that doesn't work, then inquire at the music department office or at the best music shop in town.

This is my advice: if you're really serious about learning guitar, you gotta get a teacher. You just can't figure out online tutorials without a solid basis. Most online guitar tutorials are intended to reinforce your normal lessons, not replace them.

Really, learning chords and how to read guitar tablature, etc. you can find like dozens of websites - the website for guitarworld magazine has a lot of free resources "www.guitarworld.com" and as far as lessons themselves, I would have to suggest just searching youtube because there are THOUSANDS of free guitar lessons on there, just from learning simple songs, to complex arrangements and even lessons in music theory, etc.

That is what I use.
