well i have been writing music for years, i have also been playing guitar, and here is what i personally think will help:

1. start putting those chords together and find new variations.

2. continue learning other people's music.

3. play for about an hour a day(the better you get the more enjoyable it is to play and that one hour will progress to 2 hours, then 3, then 4,and so on..........

4.in the words of joe dirt "keep on keeping on"

learn this..by practise....

stairway to heaven...led zeppelin...

Learn the basic power chords, and try to begin learning by ear and not by tabs. Start with simple rock or punk music, start and stop the player as often as necessary. You do not always want to rely on reading tabs. Train your ear by practice, and let the music be your teacher.

talk to your friends who also play guitar
make a jamming session each week
I take music for an elective at skool and am a fellow beginner guitar player and when ever we've got prac i hang out with all the guitarists and i've picked up tons of tips and tricks.
