Position:Home>Performing Arts> Is it possible for me to learn to sing tenor?

Question:I think I'm a baritone, I'm pretty sure. I'm 14 and my range is from G2 (2nd G below middle C) up to C5 (the C above middle C) not including my falsetto. The part of my range from G2 through E4 is strong. But everything from F4 through C5 is very squeaky and strained. The only time F4-C5 begins to sound stronger is when I work my way up on a scale. I've been told that I have a very light tone to my voice so it sounds that I am singing higher than I actually am sometimes. Is it possible for me to smooth out F4-C5 and be able to sing tenor? I've been singing for about a year and my range was only from C3-C4 when I first started.

you've made great progress in this last year!
However, you're not through your growth period, are you?
Your body will still be settling down for the next year or so, until you have reached your adult form.
give yourself the chance to continue doing it right, and don't force the pace- that can do more damage than you think.
Scales and step-by-step or tone -by-tone exercises are probably the best thing for you to use to limber and strengthen your upper range at this point. the big intervals are for when you are more stabilized. Remember, the higher you sing, the more you need to accomodate the sound by opening at the back of your mouth ( pharynx) and lowering your jaw, as well as adding breath energy.
Just compare: your G4 is three times as fast, measured in Hertz, than your G2. It needs more fuel to run off of! Give it more breath flow and stability from your breathing muscles.
Keep up the good work, but please be patient.

Considering the progress you've made, it seems more than possible. :)

not imposssible if u eager , but no sorender try and try in the long run u learn it better ,

Don't fight it man! You are what you are. It's great that you're expanding your range, and you should always strive to do that. 14 is a very unstable vocal age for males. What I've observed in the past is that some males whose voice changes early (like in middle school) often do not change as low as males who change later.

In other words, many of the guys who were baritones in middle school sing tenor/baritone in high school. This is not always true, though. Just be who you are and sing what you can. Keep improving your range, and when you select solos, just try to select things that fit into your range (which you seem to be very familiar with!) Love the voice you have.
