Position:Home>Performing Arts> Looking for a short, show-off piece for clarinet. (Read Details)?

Question:I've been put with the task of promoting the schools music program to prospective students -- grade 7 students. I need a short, show-off piece for clarinet to 'wow' them. I have plenty of music, the only problem is that everything that I have that is show-off-ish goes for at least 5 minutes, often 8+.

Anyone got any suggestions on a piece to play? (Has to be classical, also if anyone has any show-off pieces for sax (jazz) feel free to mention them as well, although this isn't as big a problem for me (good ol' real books).

Thanks =)

A short Rose etude could be good.

You could also play a variation from Rossini's "Introduction, Theme, and Variations." Some of the variations toward the end are short (leave out repeats) and it is mostly built on the c major chord. It is meant to be shown off.

Otherwise, you could maybe try the intro to the 3rd movement of the Mozart concerto. Not too hard.

I also love the cadenza to the Copeland concerto. It is a little harder and might be too long, though.

Play an excerpt of one of your longer pieces.

aria by bozza
a movement of five bagatelles for clarinet and piano by finzi (i like the first movement)
arabesques by jeanjean
a movement of the clarinet sonata by saint-saens
fantasy pieces by schumann
an exerpt from something by cm von weber (everything is fantastic)
