How should I get this gunk off my violin bow?

Question:There is a lot of rosin build up on the metal coil on my violin bow facing the hairs. The bow is 93 years old, and I don't think anyone's tried to get the gunk off. I'm scared to just wipe the metal coil with a cloth because the coil might come loose. Is there any way to take the gunk off or should I just leave it?

Good question. I don't think anybody can tell you what is going to happen when you try to wipe it off.
Take it to the violin shop and have a luthier look at it if you are concerned.

If it were me, I would gently wipe off the rosin with a cotton cloth. If the wiring came loose, then I would take it to a luthier.
