Yamaha or epiphone are some of the best in the lower price range

Rogue guitars are the best cheap ones I've run across.

for electrics. epiphone and ibanez will give you the most bang for your buck.

for acoustics its just whatever is in your area. there are many independent acoustic guitar companies that make great guitars. just look for them in your local shop.

i would stay away from squier, b.c. rich, yamaha, or any other "starter" guitars. they usually have very serious flaws and problems with them
