How do you roll on a snare drum?

Question:i learned by just holding the sticks loosely and letting them bounce over and over until you get pretty fast. then , when you roll, you apply some pressure so they each hit about 4 times in a row. or you can begin by just letting them bounce at a natural speed and then slowly applying pressure each time so they get faster and faster and pretty soon you have a roll!
