Position:Home>Performing Arts> Why does my Acoustic Guitar Have two Dot Fret-marks on the 7th fret while others

Question:I have 2 acoustic guitars right now, my first one had 2 dot fret-marks on the 12th fret. This new one I got had 2 dot fret-marks on the 5th and 12th fret and is missing a dot fret marker on the 3rd fret. What does this mean? Is the dots just designs? Thanks.

Guide dots are common on all acoustic and electric guitars except classical guitars. As Kabum said, they serve as reference markers to help the guitarist grab certain chords and notes in the frets desired.

I visualize the common F chord in each of those frets having the guide dots. The fifth fret is A, the seventh fret is B, and the 12th fret is E.

I have several guitars that have the guide dots just on the third, the fifth, the seventh, and the twelfth, while my HD-35 Martin has the dots only on the fifth, two on the seventh, and two on the twelfth, but singular dots interspersed in the higher frets. Notice that the guide dots are also on the top side of the neck to help the guitarist quickly find certain frets while standing.

Dot fret markers vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Most do NOT put two at the 5th fret, but two at the 12th fret is common. The dots are not "just designs," but are indeed "markers" and are there simply for visual reference. Some guitars have no fret markers at all.

I imagine if you were sort of a crazy person, you could just put them anywhere!

For visual references. Not all guitars have markers....I have a classical that does have them, and I have one that doesn't. I also so an of acoustic guitar that that doesn't have any and one that has them on the fifth, the seventh, and the twelfth. Every guitar maker is different, they also have kits where if you don't have markers you can put them on, their little stickers !!!!!!!!!!
