Position:Home>Performing Arts> How do I learn to sing without getting lessons?

Question:I saw Wicked this last year, and since then have become a big fan of broadway musicals/plays. This has sparked an interest in singing. I am EXTREMELY shy, so I wouldn't be able to take singing lessons. I basically want someone to first explain to me how to sing as best you can, then recommend some books that explain how. I want to know how to practice and get better. I've read a lot of questions on here that are like this one, but none of the techniques that are recommended seem to work for me.

Ever see the move "Little Voice"? I suggest you rent it. She learned by listening to the Great Singers. Just getting used to the sound of your own voice is one hurdle you can try and accomplish in the privacy of your own room. Perhaps then you will be able to take a class. Barbra Streisand never took a voice lesson in her life. She watched movies and listened to the singers she loved the most. Just remember that you alone are not in a position to truly "hear" your voice as it sounds. That's where a teacher and/or a friend comes in. So don't judge yourself as you sing - just sing! Have fun!

You are right - there are TONS of questions like this that are asked here. But that is because there IS no other answer - to improve your singing, you MUST take lessons. People who sell a book or an online course are just scam artists, even though they may be sincere, or have some knowledge. NOBODY can help you if they cannot HEAR you, to reinforce what is good, and correct what needs correction.

I have taught vocal music since 1971. I have had MANY shy people - some were pathologically shy! They did not SPEAK in front of other, or even to me. I got them ALL to improve, by singing with a larger group, then smaller groups. We set *progress dates* - never called them deadlines - that they move go from 5 in a group to 4 in a group, etc. We worked on all the vocal technique and solos as usual - and this component, too. I am not unique among voice teachers - you should be able to find one who will help you. There is actually a nationwide group called Joy of Singing - which is about conquering shyness THROUGH groups singing! SO there! Best of luck to you!

Go to karaoke ---- I know that on the surface this might sound silly, but it's a place where you can work on not only singing, but on the problem of shyness. It won't help you as much in the technical end of it, but there's nothing like DOING to make a difference. believe me, it won't be THE answer, but its a start. I start karaoke a couple years ago (it's a drug for me), and although I don't have a singer's voice and I don't ever consider myself particularly talented, I do okay now -- it took a while. My son visited me recently and came to the karaoke; when I was up there he commented to someone, "When the heck did he learn to sing?"

Badly I'm afraid! Threre is no magic shortcut to being a good performer. You need professional advice and that is the end of it.
You should enquire about teachers in your area and look for one who will be understanding and patient with your shyness. Don't be scared of having a trial lesson or even an interview (you are interviewing the teachers) to help you decide which one is best for you.

Take lessons, and even acting classes. Really, they go a LONG way. You must amke sure ou are using your diaphragm, and not pushing, and make sure you don't hurt yourself.

Take classes, then just don't be shy, theres nothing to worry about. Be you! :P

If you're really serious about singing you need lessons no book will subsuite for quality training your wasting your time from books, if you can't afford lessons join theatre groups that hold musicals or if you have a friend that has been singing for a while maybe they can help?
