Question:I'm doing a 3-octave scale for an Jr. All-State Orchestra audition, and I need help shifting from 5th to 7th.
My teacher probably wont see me for 2 weeks bc she had an emergency.
The audition is coming up, do you have any tips??

A shifting tip: play the A on the G string with the first finger (first position), and slide all the way up to the A on the G string one octave higher, then slide back down. This is all done with the first finger. This helps develop the fine motor control used in all shifting. Do it lots of times, every day and after two weeks you'll be shifting with ease.

Good luck!

Also, the bowing can be either one whole bow, or one down bow and one up bow. Mix it up. And tell your housemates ahead of time that you're not going crazy (because it sounds weird).

As for going from 5th pos to 7th pos; in 5th pos your pinky plays an A on the G string. Play that note to get the sound in your ear then on the A string slide with the 1st finger to the harmonic at the center of the string, that puts you in 7th pos. Hopefully the A you played with your pinky matches the A harmonic. It might not at first, so you might have to practice till it does.

Also, you might want to try this; play three A's. First the A on the G string (1st pos), then slide up to the A one octave higher on the G string but playing it with your pinky (5th pos), then play the A at the middle of the A string with your first finger (7th pos). Do this till you can do it smoothly and all the A's ring in tune. Once you have all the A's in place the rest of the notes of the scale should be easy.

pracitice something more advanced then what your going to perform as then what your going to perform will be easier, good luck.
