First of all listen to your parents, GET YOUR EDUCATION. They are right about learning a skill, but don't give up on your dreams. Take it from me once you give up your dreams it will come back to haunt you and make you regret it.

I am living part of my dream my back up job. But I really wanted to break into the music business as a recording engineer but listened to my parents and went to school for my present job.

What ever you do GET YOUR EDUCATION, they can't take that from you, Fine ways to trick your parents into listening to your music, reading your books.

remember musicians are a dime a dozen, but YOU are a rare find. Keep up the good work. Stop letting your grades slip. And keep on playing and writing.

Hang on,Baby!
I know this has to be rough for you.Your parents think they're looking out for your best interests. That being said, you still should pay attention to your studies(if for no other reason than to keep them of your back!) in doing this, they have less of a leg to stand on when they try to belittle you for taking an interest in so-called"worthless"pursuits. There will come a time when you'll have to make some tough choices, but for now, you need to have confidence in your abilities because Heaven Knows you're not going to get it at home.
Be your creative self in your spare time for now.Your parents certainly can't object to that.

Nah. It's not worth it because then you'll end up doing another career that you would regret. To get more noticed in your art work and music, try performing at local venues (coffee shops, being a street musician, etc)and having your artwork displayed in school. If there's a local artist gallery, talk with the owners to see about having some of your work displayed in there. Of course, invite your parents and friends to the events so that they can see and hear your talent.

In terms of the business side of things, it won't hurt to learn the basics of running business. Believe it or not, artists need to have a good background in business knowledge because they need to be able to promote themselves, manage their income, pay taxes (at least here in the US), know how to negotiate deals if offered, and lord knows what else. So, although I'm not saying to automatically take over your dad's business, but maybe do enough with the business to learn the basics. Plus, having the business experience will make you more employable in other music fields as well.

As for the doctors...there are many doctors who are also musicians. These doctors specialize in MANY areas and some may even have a music degree. Here in the states, there are a few performing artists medical clinics where the doctors specialize in treating musicians, actors, and dancers. I have also heard of orchestras consisting of doctors (I think there's one in NYC). Their participation may only be on a volunteer level, but it does give the doctors chance to enjoy thier "other" side as musicians.

As for lawyers, there are lawyers who specialize in the music business. The Berklee College of Music has a really good link on the possible music careers that you may want to check out. I don't know if these careers are available in Greece, but it's definitely worth looking into.

As for your parents, they sometimes fear that their child's career choice may not be the best option. I had a similar thing happen with my parents, but I insisted that music was a career that I wanted to go into. I did my best to do well in school became involved with my high school's music program. They also attended some of my performances, which allowed them to see and hear me perform. Knowing that I had talent to do well, they backed off and let me make more of my own decisions about what I wanted to do.

Good luck.

I dont think that your parents should tell you what you should do when you get older, I think if you are really intersted in music, and stuff like that then you sho[uld keep doind it and prove your parents wrong!

No, you should not give up. Your parents only want the best for you and they think like all parents do.....the music world is very difficult to get into, there's a lot of competition out there, even some great musicians don't make it....I think that Liona Boyd is one of the worlds greats classical guitarist, but I bet you never heard of her, check her out on youtube. !!!!!! (My point is that you can have many great talents but if it doesn't sell then how would you live, or support a family.).....your very young still, so why not do as they ask and get your education first....if you don't make it in the world of music then you'll have something to fall back on. If your talents are as good as you say someone some how will notice....you have plenty of time, so keep practicing your talents while you get your education....what's wrong with having both, and education and lots of talents. If you made it big in music then you'd need the education to know how to handle it all. At fourteen there aren't many places for you to get work now anyway.....so finish school first and then show us what you've got.....not only will you be more talented, (because you'll have a few more years to perfect you talents, but you'll be smarter as well. Good luck to you, I hope that you make it....slow down you still have plenty of time....and we'll be able to see someone who's not only talented but well educated too, there's noting more attrative to a women then an intelligent man, to have talents like you claim to have only adds to the attractiveness, you'll think back on this when your older and you'll see that education is the most important thing in a persons life. !!!!!!!!!
P.S. By the way I just remembered this....have you ever heard of Jackie du Pre.....she was a very famous cello player....she was a prodigy by the time she was twelve....her parents took her out of school at a very young age to study her music...and in later years she resented them for that, when she got out into the world of her music she saw how uneducated she was, she was ashamed that she couldn't even hold a conversation with people in her world of music....Read the book, it's callled Hillary and Jackie, the movie was awlful but the book was great. I know that she was always sorry that she didn't get that education that she didn't realize was so important until years later. She died at 42 from MS. I wish you luck !!!!!!!!

Don't give up, and don't listen to them for a second. Do your thing. This world is for everyone, and when you are successful in your music they will be swaggering around talking about you and how wonderfully talented you are. The only reason they aren't doing it now is that you are only 14, and haven't had any success yet.

Trust me. I have spent a lot of time in Greece, and my experience is that it's a very common thing among Greek people to only admire success. The amazing thing is that great musicians and artists come out of Greece at all (I have a lot of time for Eleftheria Arvanitaki and old-school rembetika, in case you were wondering) when it's such a big thing in Greek culture to distrust mere talent and worship material success.

Go your own way. If you are any good and you work hard at your music and other things, you will get somewhere. And then, they will behave like they believed in you all along. Good luck!
