Position:Home>Performing Arts> Should i quit band in school??

Question:i would still play the instrument i play and take lessons, but unfortunately, i wouldn't be eligible for all-district or all-state. i feel unappreshiated in my program. i have soloed in carnegie hall two years ago and been in district band continuously, yet i am third chair in my section and was not even asked to be in pit orchestra. ..
i don't learn anything from being in band, and the teacher is mean and sexist and trashtalks her husband and foreign people. its really unprofessional and we learn nothing, but i guess people are used to her and she is pretty much a part of the school now, so it's not like i could get her fired or anythin..
...and if i quit, i won't be able to do district--which i kind of dislike anyway because i always mess up the audition and spend all year learning the same piece--or take ap music theory (the teacher is the same and it would be really weird you know?)

also, how would i break the news to her? what do you think i should do????

As long as you are having private lessons than just quit.

Tell the teacher you need to spend more time practising with your private teacher ; this is your business....not hers.

Life is too short to be spent in unpleasant situations.

never drop out. Keep at it because it will be useful for you later in life. I dropped out of music in 1998, but I soon realized my mistake and quickly went back to it. The reason was because our teacher was too strict. But I took it , and her strict teachings made me a more perfect musician.

How do your parents feel about you quitting? It's a big decision. I understand how you feel; just don't make a rash decision and then regret it. Sleep on it for awhile. From your explanations, I tend to agree with you about quitting.
You don't owe your teacher an explanation about your personal decision. Just be nice and say you have other interests. (Of course, it's also fine to be honest and tell her about your dissappointments with Band.) Good Luck.

No. Don't drop out. Stick it through, or else you'll definitely regret it later.

Band leaders are always very tough on music students. It is on purpose. The music world is that way and far more strict. The teacher is training you for it. Ego trips, political BS, favoritism, fierce and back stabbing competition riddles professional music as well as any other trade you choose.

Learn how to let it all roll off your back and choose worthy battles to fight! Most of them are not worth the wasted energy. This will make life much easier for you.

YOUR TEACHER MAY SUCK BUT YOU'RE WRONG ABOUT IT NOT CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR ABILITY TO PLAY. JUST CONSIDER IT PRACTICE FOR YOUR CHOPS AND SKILLS. A LOT OF CLUB OWNERS DOWN HERE ARE JERKS TOO. SO EVERY TIME YOU PICK UP YOUR AX TO HONE YOUR SKILLS ,DO YOUR BEST,AND BUMP HER. 3RD CHAIR OR NOT YOU OBVIOUSLY CAN PLAY!I WAS 2ND CHAIR ALWAYS ON THE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND TO A PLAYER COULDN'T SOLO UNLESS IT WAS WRITTEN DOWN. SO DON'T SWEAT IT !!YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOOD! LET THE COLLEGES DECIDE WHEN THE TIME COMES AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT TEACHER. CONSIDER HER CLASS PRACTICE.
