I don't know much about his technique, but I do know he is famous for using chorus, wah, and phaser effects pedals. He is famous for using vintage guitars, which attributes to the sound overal as well. I read that he feels that the solo is not good because it is fast and has a lot of notes, but the emotion conveyed to the listener.
Sometimes solos can be better when improvised and not written. At first, you won't have the best solos, but it takes practice and time. Its always best to learn soloing on your own and not from a book.
I also suggest you do not completely base you sound off of his. His technique and style is what suits him, which may not be best for you. Its important to listen to many influences and try to make up your ideal sound.
Basically, it is all trial and error.
