Position:Home>Performing Arts> What is a 32 measure song?

Question:My daughter has an audition.
She has two songs she is singing. However,
she can only sing 32 measures of a song.

What is 32 measures. Is it for example,
if a song is a four-four count, is it
8 times a four-four count? Is that it?

A 32 measure or 32 bar songs is counted as follow. Each measure or bar has a 4 beat count to it . This applies if the song is in 4/4 and not a 3/4 which would count 3 beats to a measure.

A 32 bar song is and has been the usual standard for pop songs for many years. The format for such songs is usually what is called AABA. The A section has the main theme and is 8 bars long. The second A section is a repeat of the first 8 bars and then comes the B section called the Bridge which ties together the 2 A sections and leads to the final A section which is a variation of the first A part. For example the old standard All Of Me(A good vocal song by the way) has 32 bars. Look at a sheet music of the song and you will see how it all comes together. The number of measures has nothing to do whether the song is in 4/4 or 3/4 or whatever. The reason so many pop songs are mostly 32 bars long has everything to do with economics. The record producers do not want songs much longer than 3 minutes for airplay and keeping the audience listening so composers a long time ago started to work their songs to the 32 bar format.
