Sabian, Zildjian, and Paiste are the big names....

My dad was an amazing drummer... I think he used all zildjian with an old paiste crash he fell in love with.

Yes. Paiste is more popular, but Sabian sound great. Do a comparison at your local music store.

It's all a matter of personal preference. but a general rule of thumb, the more you spend, the nicer they sound. Even the top brands make a cheaper line of cymbals.

The best bang for my buck when I got my kit was the Zildjian 'A' series set with the new beat hats. The ride is a bit thick for my tastes (I prefer more of a ping).I tried a few and was tempted by less expensive sets, but for quality/price, it was the best I found.

In the end, it is all a matter of your personal tastes and style.
