Why not do what Jimi Hendrix did?

String it upside down and turn the guitar around. If you don't care about where the pick guard is, that's an easy solution.

Being right handed, I can't imagine trying to learn how to play left handed.

If you are left handed, you have basically three choices: a) get a left handed guitar (downside is they're more expensive and often hard to find); b) play right handed; or c) turn a right handed guitar upside down (a la Jimi Hendrix), and learn to fret the chords "upside down."

IMHO, buying a left handed guitar is really the best choice, even if it's more money. You'll do better in the long term. As far as less availability is concerned, once you've got a guitar it doesn't matter, unless you develope a serious case of G.A.S.

If you choose to play a rightie model upside down, there's just one thing...

DO NOT RE-STRING THE GUITAR FOR LEFT HANDED PLAY! You will mess up the intonation horribly.

Learn to play right handed. They don't make left handed trombones or right handed french horns. It may be a little difficult at first, but if you stick with it you will save yourself a fortune on guitars throughout your life.

Plus, no matter whether or not you have your axe, you can pick up most guitars and play them and no one has to hear "but I only play left-handed".

Plus, playing righty, all your dexterity will be in the hand that is changing chords and working the frets on those wicked hard licks. Unless you do a lot of finger picking, the other hand doesn't need a whole lot.
