play bass!
it's sweet, you always play riffs, and the bass player is always the coolest anyway.
once you know how to play bass, guitar should come quickly!

just do what you want to do.
don't be worried about the versatility of the bass, because you will overcome it.

be unique!

Bass is good if you intend to join a band. But not so good if you want to write songs, sing and accompany yourself.

If you think you'll be playing mostly by yourself and/or writing your own songs -- get an acoustic 6-string guitar It will be more versatile. Once you learn the basics of 6-string guitar, bass will be easy, should you decide to learn that later.

The bass is a sweet instrument... it's simple to play, but it's the backbone of a band - you've gotta have rhythm to hold the drums and guitars together.

You can do more with guitar... which is why I mostly play guitar. But the feeling of playing bass is awesome - you get to lay down a thick ol' groove and just flow with it.... yeah... good stuff!

Playing bass will have a shorter learning curve.... the hardest part is getting the rhythm down. Playing guitar is harder, but you can do more with it. Learning one will help you with the other, though, so there's no reason not to start now!

Go to guitar center or something and try out a couple different guitars and basses. See what fits your hands, and try playing something simple through each one. Something will speak to you, something will fit right.... go with it. You don't have to buy from guitar center, of course, go wherever you have a good variety of instruments at a decent price.

PS Chicks who play bass are hot. =)
