Position:Home>Performing Arts> How to I transpose a piano piece from the key of G to the key of E flat?

Question:Where do I start?
The first note is a D. Not the low on the high one like on the 4th line of the treble clef.
It is in the key of G, so it has a F sharp in the key signature.
How to I transpose the piece to the key of E flat?
Would the first note be a E? The high one? HELP! PLEASE!

To transpose from G to E-flat, every note has to be moved down four half-steps, because E-flat is four half-steps lower than G. (G, G-flat, F, E, E-flat.) If the first note of the original song is a D, then it transposes down to a B-flat (D, D-flat, C, B, B-flat).

The key signature for E-flat has three flats (B-flat, E-flat, A-flat).

You have to memorize your note and intervals

Intervals are numbers you count

1 - 1 1/2 - 2 - 2 1/2 - 3 - 4 - 4 1/2 - 5 - 5 1/2 - 6 - 6 1/2- 7 - 8

They ALWAYS stay the same.

NOTES

A- A#/Bb - B - C - C#/Db - D - D#/Eb - E - F - F#/Gb - G - G#/Ab - A

These ALWAYS stay the same

Now you put your NOTES starting with the KEY you are in at the NUMBERS and count to the KEY YOU WANT TO BE IN

You can do this with a wheel or two strips of paper or just with your fingers.

G to Eb

G is 1 G# is 1 1/2 A is 2 A# is 2 1/2 B is 3 C is 4 C# is 4 1/2 D is 5 D# is also Eb and that's 5 1/2

SO you count ALL your chord notes 5 1/2 steps, remember to go 3-4

Remembering to go B - C

Rule of thumb is count to 6 (remember to skip 3-4) and then flat whatever note that is unless that note is C or F because a FLAT C is B natural and FLAT F is E Natural
