My husband (a guitar genious) says go to your local music store & play a few until you find something your comfortable playing & paying the price for. He also recommends steel strings to toughen up your fingers (calouses). He says it hurts like heck to learn, but it's very worth the discomfort (fingers).

If you just want to strum along with chords, an inexpensive steel-string acoustic would be fine. There are many brands that offer descent quality beginner guitars. My advice would be to look on line at samash.com or musiciansfriend.com and look up their "starter guitar packages'. These usually run anywhere's from $80-$130 and often come with a carrying case, extra strings, instruction booklet etc..

Nylon strings are better until your finger tips toughen up. The classical sounds like a possible choice. is there a music store where you could try several? Do you know any guitarists?
Sometimes school bands sell old instruments.
How many things are both good and cheap?

Nylon Strings BELIEVE ME, If your hands aren't tough enough it would hurt a bit on the fingers you use on the frets
