You can participate in the choir without being a voice major in most colleges.

But if you really want to make your living singing and teaching voice and directing choirs, OK, here's how you go:

Talk to your church or high school choir director and explain that you want help preparing for an audition for music college. Also ask them what college might accept you--and beg them to be honest.

If your audition goes well and you get into a decent bachelor of music program, OK. If not, have a back-up plan, such as attending a community college for a year while taking private voice lessons (ask that choir director which teacher you want to hire).

Be prepared to sing for several hours daily, while studying all aspects of music, including history, composition, arranging, piano (very crucial for a voice major!), and a range of other methods classes.
