I started out on tabs... Tabs show you exactley where to put your fingers. You can start there if you'd like to get your hand and fingers used to the neck of the guitar... But you really should learn CHORDS when you are comfortable.
When you get to playing often, you will notice that your finger tips will hurt like hell until they develop callouses.

the best answer i can give you is to take private lessons like i did

Get some lessons, that's the best way.

you might want to look in some papers, or online to see if their are any people who teach guitar.

just take lessons that is how i learned to play

Start with Ebay, or a local music store.

Also, go to your local public library, where you can find a wealth of free information.

Good luck

look up videos on the internet/youtube.
theyre really helpful.
also. its not as easy as it looks. you need to be committed.
i'd say books are the most boring way to learn.
try lessons if you have money :)

Check your local newspaper to see if their are private lessons available or you could prolly search the web for a online course.

Eeeeee...no, the first thing you need it commitment. There's no quick, easy way to learn. It takes many months to learn how to play well, especially if you're older. Just building up the callusses on your fingers takes a month or so... And you have to practice/learn every day. It's an art form that isn't as easy as it looks. If you think you can be dedicated to it, then you can start blowing money on picks, books, etc...

Private lessons. However it helps if you know how to play an instrument. My daughter is a cello player. I bought her a guitar for Xmas. I just bought her some guitar lessons and she is doing fantabulous!! She loves it! Your finger will develop callouses! They will bleed if u love guitar lessons that much! Your mentors can give your advice as far as music sheet. They will guide you thru beginners and advanced lessons. Good luck!

I taught myself using tabs though you need to be quite patient as starting off is always hard but I'd probably suggest getting lessons if you want to learn the theory side aswell as I'm useless at theory as I haven't had any proper lessons.

Firstly, you have to study where to find the E,F,G,A,B,C,D on the guitar. It's quite important.

Secondly, you have to study the chords. There are many books in hich you can find them, and some book also give a CD and you can practise the rythm also.

These two things are the bases of playing a guitar.

After there you can try to play easier songs like House of Rsing sun.

But I suggest to find a teacher, it's not cheap but more effective.

I can give you tabs and programs to help you if you write me a mail.

Well. I've been playing the guitar ever since I was 8.Um.. I think it would be good is that u get a tutor and then when u get home practice the notes that ur tutor gave u. buy books about the guitar and really concentrate on ur finger movements. And when u master most of the notes try making ur own songs. I did it and it was really fun.Ask some of ur friends and make up songs with them.Thats the best

you can get all the chord shapes from www.all-guitar-chords.com, when you have mastered the basic chords try and find some one to practice with. I learned more playing with other players than out of any book. you need to be dedicated as it is very hard when you first start and your fingers will get very sore.

nobody really wants to know where your going to put your hands, just buy a book from amzon.

I'd say, take some lessons...teaching yourself is very hard, although I did it because I was lacking money...and now I find it wasteful to get lessons because I learned the full basics and am now between medium and advanced.Getting books is a good way too...if you want to learn by yourself,I'd suggest Dan Denley's or Will Landrum's Guitar theories...just look around the internet for their names.I've been getting emails from them for 2 years and they've helped me a lot!
And there isn't a 'boring way' to learn guitar because every lesson brings something new which you get desperate on because you can't get it right :)) and, believe me,with the guitar, there is no way in hell you could know everything!!! When you think there's nothing else to learn, POOF! there comes something new :D
A good thing to know is reading tablature. It pops up everywhere and if you don't know how to read it,you're dead.I could give you an example:
e-----------------------------0-----|
B---------6----------------------1-|
G--------------5h7p5----------2-|
D-------------------------7------2-|
A----5------------------------------|
E-0---------------------------------|

the letters are the notes. As you should know, the notes are written as this: Do(C),Re(D),Mi(E or e),Fa(F),Sol(G),La(A) and Si/Ti(B). The 6 letters in the tablature are the strings...the E is the thickest, and e is the thinest...this is the standard tuning of the guitar...now,the numbers denote the frets played. 0 is an open string...you don't push it down. 5 on the A string is in fact a D(the note on the 5th fret,A string). You have to know the W W H W W W H rule. W is a 'whole-step' : the distance of 2 frets between the notes. for eg. Fa(1st fret on the E string) is a whole-step away of Sol(3rd fret on the E string).AND the H means a 'half-step' which denotes the interval between other notes. REMEMBER: half steps are between the notes E-F and B-C.
Now the p and h things on the tablature: those are Techniques. The Hammer On and Pull Off. the Hammer on: place your finger on the 2nd fret,6th string(the thickest...1st is the thinest) and after you strumm it,'toss' your next finger on the 3rd fret, next to it and you should hear the next note instead of the first note. The Pull off is the exact opposite! Hold your fingers there. now strumm the 6th string holding your fingers on the 3rd and 2nd fret and after the strumm, release the first finger so you'll hear the note of the 2nd fret.

Hope it helped!

ohh yeah, forgot to add: if you see notes on top of each other, that's a CHORD! the 1-2-2 from the tab I wrote you is the A minor chord. If you wanna do a A major chord, you just move the first note up one fret and you'll get 2-2-2 instead of 1-2-2.
