Position:Home>Performing Arts> What serious career can I get in the Creative/Performing Arts field?

Question:I am 22 yrs old and I can not figure out exactly what I would like to do as a career. Everytime I take a career test I get almost 100% in the Creative/Performing Arts field. I have acted and sang when I was in school plays but I do not want to be an actress because it is not a stable career. I love fashion, but it seems the only thing to do with that is become a fashion designer and that's not stable either. I am a great writer and I love to read, but I still don't see how to make that work for me. I know that I love the performing arts but I want something that I can actually make money to support myself. Does anybody know SERIOUS jobs that involve movies, plays, fashion, tv, etc...? If there are jobs out there, how do I find them and where are they? I really need help because I have a passion for the arts but I have no idea how to make that work for me.

Everybody wants to be out front - but they cannot get it done without the people BEHIND the scenes. Look into jobs in production, management, recording, music business, etc. Many colleges offer degrees in these areas. Look at how long the credits are in movies and TV shows - the stars names take 10 seconds - the behind-the-scenes people's names run for MINUTES. You may have to start in office work in the arts, and when you have proven yourself, then move into things that are more creative. This will not get done right away - people often joke that it took them ten years to be *an overnight success*> Good luck - you sound sensible and passionate. And along the way, you can be as creative as you wish - it's you life, and live in in COLOR - not gray!

well u can become a director or writer ur choice those jobs are pretty stable.

There are no serious jobs. There's studio work but it's the same thing everyday, because it's union. To work full time you have to do clerical or be driver (Teamster) or work the sound department or prop department or archives.

Everything else is job to job.

If you are truly serious about a creative or performing arts career as a creator or performer, the rewards can be huge, but you simply have to make that comittment. There are no "stable" jobs in any field. You have to keep up your skills and work hard wherever you go and whatever you do otherwise you will find yourself out oin the street, even if you are working in a low-paying, menial labor job.

So instead of trying to figure out what career you want on the basis of its "stability"" or "seriousness," figure pout what you want to do based on what you want to to. Take classes and network with people who do it. Be pleasant and fun to be around while you develop your talent. Then you will have the unbeatable combination of being good at what you do and good to work with. Then you will get hired early and often. Just consider that every moment of your life needs to be dedicated to your careeer. It will be anyway, you might as well make it a career you enjoy.
