You can learn to play just about any instrument in one day.

Now, do you want to learn how to play it WELL? That takes longer.

To make fastest possible progress:

1) Make sure your instrument is properly adjusted--take it to a professional repair shop if you aren't sure.

2) Get lessons. Few beginners can correct little errors in finger or wrist position on their own, it needs an observer who knows what to look for. If you don't get those errors corrected early on, they fudge up your playing later and maybe lead to joint or nerve injury. Now, after maybe a dozen lessons, you should have the fundamentals down properly and you might opt to continue learning on your own, using books, cds or dvds.

3) Practice several short sessions daily. Aim for four or six 10-minute practices. This will get you there faster than one longer practice. Now, you will need to extend the practice time eventually, because you need stamina to perform a full set--but build up slowly, extending one practice session to, say, 15 minutes after the second week, 20 minutes after the third--and then start dropping the other shorter practice sessions, one by one, if you want. Eventually you work your way up to playing for an hour or more at a stretch with no serious fatigue problems. (Playing too long without slowly building up to it can lead to things like tendinitis--so in addition to making the learning curve steeper, building up slow like this is healthier.)
