THere are a lot of things that go into an electric guitar. While most guitars at this budget are going to be basswood. Pickups are difinantly going to play a major role in how you sound. THis will also vary depending on the amp you get. If you want something versitle for things like blues or cleaner music go for a stratocaster.http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-by-Fe... I play an American made Stratocastor. Squiers made in mexico or japan are bad imitations get a better imitation!. I would sooner go with an Ibanez, Washburn, or Schecter if you can't afford a real Fender or Gibson.
