Gosh...lots of possibilities. What's your audience type? Like is it for a general speech class or are you talking to musicians? Here's some possible ideas:

Your favorite musician

Brief history of famous female musicians

Influence of music through politics (Riots in the 70s, Vietnam war, Dixie Chicks and president Bush, etc).

The development of a certain genre of music

Instrumental history (history of guitar for example)

Music in the media

Research in World Music (ethonomusicology)

Children and Music...there's been debate over the years if classical music helps make children smarter.

Basics of the Music Business industry--which schools to attend, top agencies and studios, artists in the music business, etc.

Different Music Programs (performance, music education, etc) that are available in the U.S. You can also list your findings of the top schools in each area

Copyright right laws in Music --what is illegal and what is not and how that affects everyone in the music business, including performers

Perhaps you could talk about a specific band such as 'Radiohead' or 'Rage Against The Machine' because they are both popular bands with good music but also are very unique and have quite a cult following. Another idea could be to talk about how some bands have change the society of the time, like the progression of the Blues to Rock and Roll, or even the birth of Punk rock in the UK and how it transformed the community to rebel against the society.

The black slaves from west Africa gave us the rhythms and chants from the cotton fields work songs, this evolved into the blues, which gave birth to jazz, R & B, Soul, Gospel, Funk, Disco, rock n roll, then rock, heavy metal, neo classical , grunge and death metal etc. Now people are back to playing with an acoustic guitar and singing, just like the old blues guys back in the day.

Well, there are many musice choices. You should try listening to the radio that give you some choices. My favorites are

- In movies to create moods. A horror movie would not be as suspensful if you could not hear the music (mute the tv while watching and you will see)

-Those that Rap and listen to rap tend to admore the "thug" lifestyle (Tony Montana, Al Capone, etc.)
