Violin, just because:

It's smaller, and easier to carry around.

You play in the "G" clef, which is slightly more common than the bass or alto clef.

The strings are thinner, so you don't have to press down as hard (and when you're first learning, it's nice to not have to worry about string pressure in addition to everything else you have to learn.)

After you learn violin you can move on to the other instruments (and in response to some of the other responses:

Violin and viola are definitely similar, but not practically the same; different strings, you play in a different clef, and it's thicker than the violin so your neck feels like it's way stretched out.

And regarding the response about being able to sit when playing a cello or viola: you sit when playing violin too, and bass players often sit on high stools, so standing isn't really an issue for any of them. Just my two cents worth :)

out of those: none, I would start with the Double Bass.

violin & viola r pretty much the same but cello is a little bit harder because is bigger and different notes

Well I play the Violin and itz easier becase when u play cello, u get really confused on which way u play move the bow because the bow is side ways. So I recommend u to play either violin or the viola. If u're playing in the Orchestra or somethin, the violas don't get much melodys so well I guess Violins....=)

the cello ... of the three instruments, the position is the most natural ... and in case you like early music, you can also play the gamba, which is not that unlike a cello

.....although you do have to drag it around and that is a drag, especially since you *must* be careful of your hands and your back and dragging around a cello in its case does not do anything for your technique

...also the repertoire is nice; beautiful sounding instrument

As a folk fiddler, I'd go for violin. you can get great tunes for it, and it's easier to carry around.

viola or cello... You can be seated while you learn...

I would start with violin before viola just because violins are lighter and smaller. Violins are probably easier to learn first in terms of where to put your fingers especially if you want to be in tune. If you're going to be in an orchestra, 1st violins definitely get more interesting things to play. However, there is also tons of competition as a violinist but not enough good viola players

I love the sound of cellos. I always wanted to play, but seriously never got to. I didn't want to lug cello around, and the strings are harder on your fingers.
