Position:Home>Performing Arts> I want to learn how to play piano?

Question:...But my mom says it's too late for me because I'm 16 years old and I won't be able to be professional or anything...the thing is that her piano level is 10 and she can play very well, and when I was little she asked me many times if I wanted to take private piano lessons... but I was a stupid stubborn kid and I kept refusing... and she was like " Watch, someday you are going to regret this" Well now I do and she says it's too late for me... and that I should learn to play guitar or something... and that if I really want to play piano, I would have to have at least 3 lessons a week,
but she doubts I would continue taking lessons when I'm in university... But I can't have more than 2 lessons a week cause i have homework.
I don't know what to do.I really want to learn how to play piano, and I don't know how to convince my mom..I don't want it to be a waste of money either, cause we aren't very rich.Do you think I have a chance in learning how to play piano well,or should i forget it?

It is not too late. It just means you will have to work hard. You don't need more than one lesson a week BUT, you will have to practice, practice, practice. It's the practice between lessons where you will make progress. I had many students who started as late or later than you and went on to play professionally but they did work hard at it. It's up to you how much you want to put into it. Some people start and suddenly realize that it's not as easy as they thought and they quit. It comes down to how much you really want it.

Well if your mom is so good then she should teach you! That ways you can fit in as many lessons you need a week, even if their short you can and schedule it around your homework in your free time. Plus, they'd be free. If your mom doesn't want to teach you, then that's not very nice of her at all. It sounds like you'll have to wait untill you can pay for it yourself then.

i think she should be encouraging you...but in the mean time learn as much as you can on your own to prove to her you are serious then ask for lessons again

the fact that your mum is a good piano player you should really get her to teach you.

the best way is to be like any normal teacher and constantly beg her until she gives in.

or you could ask her really nicely and explain to her why you didnt want to in the past.

if you tell your dad or a grand parent they will probably nag your mum aswell lol.

i dont think you should forget it unless your not that serious about playing it.

btw too much homework isnt an excuse i didnt have enough time to go out running when i was training for a kickboxing fight so i got up 2 hours earlier in the morning so i could do it. its hard and it takes commitment but hardwork pays off.

hope this helps =)

Just because you want to learn to play the piano, doesn't mean that you want to go pro. People do play piano just for enjoyment of it. If she will allow it, I wouldn't stress about taking extra lessons either to make up for the years you didn't take them. Just go and have fun. Yes it will be fustrating at first, but if you really enjoy it, it is a worthwhile persuit.

i think it's cool that you want to learn to play. it doesn't have to be towards a career; you can just want to play the piano for the sake of enjoying it. i think some colleges offer non-major piano classes, so beginners can learn how to play (mine does-Oklahoma City University). so, you could continue if you really wanted, and if your university had the class. but, yeah, i think you have a chance. if you practice enough, you'll be good on two lessons a week. if you want it enough, tell your mom what you're willing to do. i think it would be worth it.

good luck! :)

I'd guess that 16 is yet pretty young and you will have lots of years to be able to practice so you would be professional in time. Especially if you are naturally talented in music, which there is a good chance that your are. Do you have a music teacher in school where you attend who could work with you some, to see what you can do? Good luck.

Well, you could either have her teach you, or you could go for internet lessons. With internet lessons, you can learn at your own pace, you can mess up as many times as you want, and still learn the piano.
