1. Find a qualified guitar instructor and buy a beginner's guitar chord book having basic music theory.

2. Have your instructor show the good habits to form in building chords and playing them, how to string a guitar, how to take care of your instrument, and how to tune it.

3. As you learn and practice forming various chords ask your instructor to teach you the basics of music theory.

4. As you progress, ask the instructor to help you in:

a. Chord progression
b. Key transposition
c. How to determine the key signatures in music.
d. Writing basic music notation.
e. Playing rhythm as he plays melodies and vice versa.
f. Learning the Chromatic Scale with chords and notes.

5. Practice rhythm and strumming techniques--both striking the fundamental bass tone and strumming down and then back up. Practice fingerstyle methods of right picking different strings in chord backup.

6. Keep your instrument clean and in good shape. Treat it better than you would your own body. Keep your hands clean and dry while playing. That cuts back on oily residues.

7. Watch other guitarists and their technique or style. Copy their methods up to the point of forming your own style.
And finally, your fingertips will hurt terribly until you can build the calluses on them. Until then, you must endure hours of practice. If you don't have the motivation and strong will to work past the problem of sore fingertips you will never be a guitarist.

Thank you, Jayden, for selecting my reply as best. I wish you success in the fine art and joy of guitar playing. Endure for the calluses and take the challenges head-on. Report It

I use myself a similar thing. Different chords you can find easily from any guitar site online.

About picking out your guitar... It is really hard thing to do, especially if you don't know much about it. I bought my guitar about 5 years ago and then i already had played for some 6 months. I got a pretty good one, and it wasn't very expensive either, so i was lucky. I really recommend you to speak with the people from the store you are going to buy it, they are usually very smart and can help a lot.
When it comes to the choice which one to take, then is very very important the sound. Try many guitars and have someone with you who knows a little bit about it, so he/she could help you. Guitars with same price can have very different sound quality. And while you are trying the sound, of course make sure that it isn't out of tune, because then it will sound bad, too lol. And then also all sorts of smaller things like buying extra strings, just in case the old ones should break, or buying a tuner, so it would be easy to keep your guitar in tune, things you could think on, too.

I usually play using tabs. One good place to find chords/tabs for songs is www.ultimate-guitar.com .

Well, it's a bit hard to say it all, but if you're going to take lessons, then i'm sure it will be just fine=) it's good when there's someone who will help you to get on track.

    Good luck!
