Position:Home>Performing Arts> Why can't I get my guitar action low enough?

Question:I tried to lower my strings to a desirable height on my electric guitar but I keep getting fret buzz. What's the problem? Is it because my guitar is super cheap? I hope so, than I have an excuse to by a new one.
Otherwise, what is it? The neck seems OK.

The lower you get your strings, the more fret buzz your going to get. Sometimes in inexpensive guitars the neck will flex and you wont be able to get your strings real close on the higher end of the neck. If your guitar has a steel rod in the neck (most do), then a qualified tech can sometimes adjust it to take some of the bend out of the neck.

If you have a real cheap guitar, use your excuse and go buy a new one.

best advise take it to a pro shop

I've got a £45!(new) Gould stratocaster...and a book called "how to make your electric guitar play great!"...by Dan Erlewine...just in case youre too tight to buy it?...firstly check that the neck is straight(no more than 8 thou.of relief)...you might have to adjust the truss rod to get it right?...loosing it off?...increases the relief...and tightening straightens...always mark the start position with a mark so you dont forget where it was...then using a black permanent marker pen...paint the tops of all the frets...then lightly stone them until there is no black ink left on the crowns...then polish the frets with steel wool....check that the nut is cut correctly...ie the slots should be cut the same angle as the fall off to the machine heads...then check the string clearance from the nut over the first fret?...this should be the same as the clearance over the 2nd.fret when fretting the 1st. fret...then adjust the bridge saddles to form the same radius as the neck?...a fender strat can be 7 1/4"(vintage)-9 1/2" (modern)...gibsons/paul reed smith/ibenez can be 12"-16"...a gauge can be made from plastic and a pencil on a string can be used to mark it out......
