It's gonna be tough to switch to a woodwind instrument. I would suggest that you start with regular clarinet. Learn the fingerings, get used to the mp and reed, etc. Reading music will be the same, and that is one battle you won't have to fight. But buzzing into a mouthpiece and playing a woodwind is different. It will just take practice.
I say GO FOR IT>
But get a clarinet first. Learn all the fingerings, and then they all transfer very easily to the contrabass clarinet.
Might I ask.......Why the contra bass??? Curious switch.
But I like it.
Good luck, and keep making that beautiful music.

I'm a euphonium player, you traitor! Keep playing it! But I love the contrabass (all too seldom played). Clarinets in general aren't tremendously hard to learn. You'll probably need to start on a regular clarinet, though it's possible to start on contrabass. Difference will have to do with size of mouthpiece and ease of response (more sluggish than reg. clarinet). It will also take more air volume than a Bb, but as a youffer you'll have that covered already.
