Position:Home>Performing Arts> How can I measure guitar string thickness?

Question:One of the strings on my SG broke this morning, and I was wondering if there is any way to tell what gauge it is. It's the high e string too, so it'll be the toughest to figure out because it's so thin. I have no idea what the default string usage is when they're shipped, and I couldn't find it anywhere.
Any help would be appreciated.
It's not really that big a deal because I'm gonna end up replacing them all, but I like the gauge I'm using, so it would be helpful to know what to buy.
Thanks again.

SG standard comes with brite wires .010-.046 according to the Gibson site
see the link below

Well you tell the gauge by the size of the high E string usually. "10's" have a 10 gauge high E. That's one of the most common gauges by the way so that's probably the size.

You could take the broken string to a music store and see if they can match it up to be sure.

Hope that helps.

your best bet is to change all of them. the bightness will be different with a new string. if you have a set of calipers you can check it. or if you have the same packaging. its probably a 9 or a 10 set on there. ghs string are very good check them out.
