Question:Hello.
I'm writing a novella about a four-piece band (their style is mostly folk-rock); how do bands get signed these days? Do, like, talent scouts/record guys and that kind of thing still approach them? What do the record guys say?
What happens after they've been singed? Do they get, like, a manager?
Please help; I know I sound incredibly ignorant but I've got all the other stuff worked out -- I just need to know the technical procedure side of things!

Any help you can give me would be extremely appreciated. Thank you all so much for your time.

There are various paths to stardom, and these days, they don't really include opportunities for folk-rockers.

Generally, a band like this would work bars, produce it's own first CD on an there own indie label. They might work there way up to more concert like venues (Like World Cafe Live in Philly) and would hook up at some point with a manager. They could use their "product" (CD) to solicit management, or they might be discovered at a venue by a manager.

Either with a manager or without, they could solicit an AR rep (Artists and Repertoire) using their CD. However, before sending the product, they would have to speak personally with the AR rep, since unsolicited material is routinely returned unopened, because of the possibility of accusations of copyright infringement.

If they are accepted, the manager negotiates a contract with the label, an advance is given against future earnings, a CD is recorded, marketed, and if the band is lucky, they get to make another CD. If not, bye bye!

yes. a band needs a manager to book 'em some gigs.
talent scouts are around they only approach if the band is worth the spotlight!
