Andrew Lloyd Webber really does a fantastic job capturing the emotion of the deeply complex character of the Phantom.

I'm very fond of "Masquerade." It is oddly reminiscent of another musical that I'm very fond of, "Chess." It also fits in with the scene and characters better than many of the other songs. It stands on it's own very well and has a meaning outside of the scope of the musical as well.

It should be noted that the Phantom in the musical is, in many ways, very different from the Phantom in the book. Book Pahntom wasn't a romantic figure at all; he was just really creepy and would never have sung something as romantic as that.
