I'll second what AgonyAuntie just said but would also add that singing accurately on pitch and in key is essential. If you're flat or off-key, it won't matter how good your breath control is -- you're still going to sound like crap.

Diaphragmatic and breath support are essential to projecting your voice at any range or volume. Also remember to open your mouth wide, and allow the voice to flow from you. Don't waste valuable breath support on superfluous sounds, like 'h's that don't exist in the lyrics (or librato). A good trick to verifying your breath technique is to see how a tissue flutters in front of your mouth when you sing: It should barely move.

All of the best to you!

To me... singing has to be something you have experience in doing. Like singing in the shower/ bath. or listen to music for a long time. But before you do all these things you must make sure you know what type of songs suit your voice. Eg. If you have a low voice, you may choose a song sung by a deep voiced person. But I find my piano useful, and i think my piano can easily tune up my voice. Find an instrument- that may help! Oh and when you run out of breath, just take a quick short breath and carry on with singing. But find an appropriate time to take your breath!

Learn to breathe properly (from the diaphragm, without tension)

Learn to listen properly (know do from mi from la)

Learn to listen to the music as you play- pay attention to rhythm, diction, and know when certain tones will have a certain sound.

Practice, Practice, Practice.

I suggest looking up vocal warm ups, and pick a dozen songs in your range you can sing

it all makes you sound better!

When you sing

1. Over pronounce your words and letters (mostly H, G, Y...)
2. When singing vowels, sing them then tall instead of wide (when singing an A, sing it Aw instead of Ah)
3.Breathing and tone: you don't want to sound very breathy because your tone will sound breathy. When practicing, if something sounds breathy, cup your hands and put them over your mouth and sing. Then remove your hands and it should sound less breathy. Or put your pointer finger and thumb together and put it to your mouth. Then blow your notes into your fingers. Then try singing without your fingers.
4.When breathing, you should be breathing outwards so your ribs come out instead of your stomach.(To practice this, lay on the floor on your side. Place a hand on your side and do a yawn warm up from your highest note to your lowest note. Then do your other side. You will feel the difference which should help you when breathing when you are standing up)
5.For pitch, if you are singing a song, try playing the notes on the piano and it that might help find the right notes.

Hope this helped :]

drink a healthy amount of water the day before you sing. your vocal cords have to be wet to sing without crackling. if you drink enough the day before, the better you'll sing the next day. that takes care of a crackling, but it takes a lot of hard work to improve your voice.
