Position:Home>Performing Arts> I want to be a drummer?

Question:But I'm 21 already. I feel like I'm too old to start learning how to play an instrument that most kids start learning when they're in their early teens. I remember liking it when i was little but just didn't have the money to buy a complete drum kit.
Do you think I'm too old

If you want to be a drummer, then be a drummer. Picking up a saxophone or clarinet or even a single snare drum will not help you be a drummer at this point, as someone recently suggested. While having a teacher is a great idea and I took lessons for almost 10 years from the age of 13, the most important thing you need to ask yourself is why you want to be a drummer. Do you listen to drummers when you hear a song? Can you picture yourself practicing alone in your basement or a closed-off practice room several times a week? Are you doing this to become a rock star or because you simply love the drums? You're not too old to be a drummer, even a great drummer, but if you're doing it because it's cool or you think you can be the next John Bonham, then re-examine your motivation.

That said, being passionate about anything will help you be better at that thing. And playing GOOD live music to a small, but sold out, happy crowd is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

I suggest you practice, practice, take lessons, practice, jam with other similar leveled musicians, find a band you like, and go for it. You'll get out of it what you put into it.

No one is ever too old to learn a musical intrument. You are only 21, you have your whole life in front of you. Plus you are older and more mature so you will learn quicker. I concider myself a percussionist, and I didn't start learning until I was 16. Just invest your money in a good teacher and a good drum set. The key to learning is having a good teacher. Good luck and have fun!!!

So.... age doesn't matter, as long as you really want to do it. But for a 21 yr old you have a lot of distractions in the world today and drumming takes a lot of work with all the many different rhythms so you should learn the saxophone instead preferably alto. Also you dont need to buy a whole drum kit, all you really need is a snare. But the clarinet is better than them both so i think you should learn that instead... but drummers do get laid more...if you know what i mean... lol... kidding.... not

You are not too old to learn!!....21 is a great age to start....

I started when I was 16 so you are still not too old to play. Go fir it, start saving your cash, start looking at catalogs etc.
If you are short on money, go for a nice USED drum kit for now to learn on. They are not that expensive really.
