Position:Home>Performing Arts> Tuning advice!?

Question:Hi there :)

I'm an aspiring clarinet player and I have a few issues with tuning which i was hoping, some other kind muso's can shed some light on..?

The truth is, I need to give a lot more attention to tuning when I perform.

When performing in chamber music situations, I'm extremely cautious and aware of tuning, but with just piano (obviously more soloistic style music) I really have no idea..and as a result no longer try so hard.. :/

(i know i don't sound too bad.. but yeah it is an issue :/ )

Could anyone offer me some tried and tested methods to bring my awareness and tuning ability up to that much higher standard that i find a lot of string instrumentalists and even flute players have?

Right now Im focusing on major thirds as long notes.. but is this the best stepping stone to take?

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated!
take care ! :)

well, tuning is a very hard thing to do while you play but heres something you can do. Go back yo your years as undergrad and try to remember your ear training classes. This is something that works pretty well for wind instruments. Play your tuning note on the piano and blow your horn get it perfectly in tune and think of the intervals you are practicing, in this case major thirds. Then play the intevals at the piano and sing them out then repeat on your horn. Then do the same trying different intervals my advice would be to do the intervals in the major scale until you ca n hear the notes in tune then try chromatic scale intervals and runs.

I can't really give you much advice because i'm younger than you and i've been only playing for three years but maybe you should play a Bb with the piano and if it does not match your pitch in sharpness or whatever, you should tune to the piano. That's usually what I do. I hope that this helps.
