A lot of music has it's roots in Jazz. So it might be better to study Jazz.

When it comes to bettering yourself....NOTHING is stupid! I say go for it!

First learn what you must however you can to play basic rock, which is not all that complicated musically.

Once you do this, I think it would be a good idea for you to study music theory at a junior college even if you only want to be a rock guitarist. In time, such studies would give you new musical ideas that you could apply to your own music.

After you learn some basic music theory, then it would be a good time for you to study jazz if you gradually develop an interest in it.
