Preggers is right. If you got a new bow along with your new violin, you have to get rosin on the bow hair before you can get any sound out of the violin. Take a key or a small sharp knife and scratch up the surface of the rosin real good, then stroke the scratched-up surface against the bow hair, starting at the frog (the "handle end" of the bow) all the way to the tip and back again, over and over for a good minute or two.

Also, even after you get the bow rosined up, if you're new to violin playing, you're going to find that will take quite a bit of practice to learn how to draw the bow across the strings to get a smooth, pleasant tone. Beginning violinists all sound like they're killing cats when they first start... :-)

you have to buy rosin for the bow and put alot on there especially if its new. and when u get new rosin u kinda have to crack the top a little bit and make it get powdery. then put alot of it on the bow hairs. and it should be good to go.

most likely, you need new rosin. however, it could also be a problem with the string itself, especially if it only does this on the a string.
