You can start at the 5th fret low E string, start with your index finger on 5th fret, middle on 6th, ring on 7th, pinky on 8th, now you should just move back one fret and down one string, so on the A string its index on 4th, middle on 5th, ring on 6th and pinky on 7th, now same thing, back one fret and down one string, that is until you get to where your pinky is on the 5th fret G string you do not go back one fret just go down one string. You can do this exercise starting on any fret from the 5th on up. To start from the 4th and below will require the use of open strings...so mess around with it. Also see this, as its probably less confusing than whatever I just wrote...

All of them, but not at the same time.

I personally am a fan of root 2nds, 3rds, 5ths, 7ths, 10ths, and 12ths, and occasionally 4ths and 8ths. Shredding, for example, sounds awesome when you throw in some root 2 5

e--12-10------12-10-----
b-----------12-----------12

about four times, or maybe root 4 5 7 8

g-0-5-7-8-5-4-5-7-4- 7-8-10-7-8-10-12-8

as seen in dethklok's thunderhorse.

And, of course, there's every punk's favorite: root 7 12 all at once

g--7
d--7
a--5

the power chord.
