Personal taste, my friend. I started playing guitar at 18 and chose an off brand copy of an acoustic "Gibson Hummingbird" Even as a copy it was excellent. Very hard to find. When switching to an electric it depends on your taste in sound. My personal choices were the Gibson Lez Paul Deluxe (smooth mellow tone, yet crisp) coupled with a mid sized Marshall amp with a wide range of capabilities or a Fender hollow body with a Carver amp. Both choices had excellent sound and great versatility. Personal choice for a bass was a reworked Fender body with a West neck and D'Addario copper wound strings. Smooth. Or the Fender fretless with round wound strings. So, again, personal choice and the sound you are lokking for.

Well, in my opinion, I'd go with any of the Ibanez RG series. They are the easiest to play, and have a very universal tone.

Good amp. . . PEAVEY

good electric guitar . .. .. Fender Strat or Tele

gibsons are too heavy, not sound but physically.

Stay away from packs, they're usually crappy. If I were you I would bring someone with three years on they're back at the least to check out the guitars because these guys that sell the music stuff try and get rid of the crappiest things.
