If you are referring to fingerstyle playing--using all the fingers on your right hand--then I suggest finding an instructor qualified. Classical and Flamenco guitar players do well in fingerstyle, but also those mimicking Chet Atkins and his style know what fingerstyle playing is all about too.

Shop around for a qualified instructor, take some lessons in the basic fingerstyle methods, and work at it.

Basically, the thumb strikes the sixth and the fifth strings, the forefinger strikes the D string, and the remaining fingers catch the third, second, and first strings.

With that method of practice you can also try the Flamenco flourish--start with the little finger, using the nails, and fan upward with each finger following the small finger.

Then, going downward in a flourish, start with the little finger and let the remaining fingers follow down the strings. In this exercise the thumb does nothing.

In essence, you're exercising and stretching the fingers while making beautiful arpeggios.

there's different ways to do it depending on what your playing. I've been playin 4 ly ka year n 3 months. hold it wit ur thumb on one end and ur index finger on da other side wit da pointed end of the pick hitting the string have ur other3 fingers away fro mthe string and relaxed ............If you gonna play like regualr not really fast music then rest ur wrist on the section where the string vibration stops at n use ONLY ur wrist to strum up and down. For power chords you should kee pur wrist up. IF your gonna play fast stuff like Misirlou then support the pick with ur middle finger...but thats alot harder id learn that a lil later cuz its fast..but yeh start like that n get the feel for it. =]
