Position:Home>Performing Arts> I adore playing the guitar but....?

Question:i never have any time for it.i started playing the piano about 3 years ago, and i really like it.i started getting into the guitar about the year after.i LOVE it.right now im playing both and my parents pay for lessons.im in school and its really hard to do 30 minutes of each everyday.my parents dont really care about the guitar[they dont like it for some reason] so they never ask if i practice.its completely opposite with the piano.everyday, 30 minutes, dont practice and my dad flips out.i try to make an effort to practice the guitar everyday, but i only end up doing it 2 times a week at the max.with the piano, 30 minutes seems like forever.when i play the guitar, i end up playing it for 3 hours and it feels like 2 minutes.i dont know if i should quit getting lessons and teach myself, or if i should stick to lessons and try to find the time.without a teacher, i cant progress as fast as i do with one.but its easier cause i dont have a "deadline" to learn something.lessons, or no?

It does help when learning any musical instrument that you enjoy your time on that instrument.

Piano is a great instrument to learn for any musician as it gives a solid foundation and understanding which can be transposed to other instruments.

I also play piano and guitar and have played both for many years, beginning with the piano. When I picked up the guitar I wished I'd picked it up earlier as like you I would play for hours.

I did some lessons but I knew far more about music than the teacher, thanks to my piano knowledge, and as you have found, my guitar teacher wanted me to learn in his way and in his time. I wanted to learn some techniques from him but it seemed outside of his system so I chucked in the lessons.

I continued to teach myself by learning the different types of scales and many chords. I also used to play along with my favourite songs - which helped enormously. Get to know the fretboard like you know piano keys. This will help.

Even though lessons can be and usually are beneficial, if it becomes too much of a strain then give up the lessons and try to enjoy the guitar when you can. After all, if you enjoy as much as you say then you'll find time for it. You can always go back to lessons sometime in the future................

Good luck.
