Position:Home>Performing Arts> 3/4 acoustic guitar left handed - where to purchase?

Question:My son is 8 and wants an acoustic guitar. The local shop does not have any left handed 3/4 guitars. They can modify the right handed one for an extra $50. Before I spend the extra money, I wanted to be sure there wasn't another, better, option. Online or store - either is fine with me if they are reputable. THANKS!

I'm left handed and have been playing right handed guitars for over 45 years. If you can persuade your son to play a"normal" guitar in many ways it is better, cos when you start guitar, you need the power and co-rdination in your left hand for changing chords and holding the strings down. Otherwise ,it is probably a good idea to let your local shop to the modification if they can't order one for you, cos at least in the event of problems they are close to hand. It's not a big job - all they have to do is take the strings off, put in a new nut (the bit the strings go over near the tuning pegs) and possibly a new bridge, the put the strings back on in reverse order.
Go for him playing right handed if you can though. Hope this helps

People who are left handed are able to play right handed guitars if thats all they have ever known. This could be a cost effective solutuion to your problem.

However, if you are sure that you want to get him a left handed guitar, i think having the shop modify it is a good solution as you know the quality of the guitar already and therefore there is no danger of being ripped off.

On the other hand I think only large named guitar makers make left handed guitars and i'm not sure whether in 3/4 size, and they will most certainly be more expensive.

If i were you i would ask the shop to modify the guitar to make it left handed one

You can always get a left handed guitar from Musician's Friend, Guitar Center, Folk of The Wood, or even Amazon.com, but your son isn't going to get to hold it first and tell you that it's the right one for him.

Any guitar can be made into a left handed guitar by switching out the neck nut and saddle, but before you make the commitment of actually buying one, let him try a regular guitar first. Ritchie Blackmore (lead guitarist for Deep Purple, Rainbow, and of late - Blackmore's Night) happens to be left handed but plays right handed guitar. Many speculate that this actually gives him an advantage since his dominant hand is up on the fretboard. Let him take a couple of lessons with a standard guitar and see how it sits with him. Make the decision after he gets a chance to tlak to his teacher and gets all the facts. Statistically, most left dominant people who start with a left handed guitar get discouraged and give it up after a very short time. I'm not suggesting that you make him right handed, just that playing guitar with his dominant hand on the fingerboard might actually give him an edge over everybody else!

obviously you can refer to any related website of any country

Musician's friend or guitar center will have an electric one for about $100 then you'll need an amplifier.
