Question:I am writing a piece of music for the bass drumline and it would be nice to hear the music played before we try it on actual drums. If theres any non-free programs let me know about those but I'd rather it be free (who wouldn't?) Thanks.

Try Finale Notepad. It probably won't play back using drum sounds, but if you're using tonal basses it will play back the rhythms using regular notes. It's a free download on Finale.com
