Your teacher knows what is best....maybe your rushing too far ahead by skipping important things in music theory, are you able to read music well....do you know the scales, when playing do you know what key your playing in.....these are all important things if you want to become a good musician, and your teacher knows this.....most young people are in a hurry to learn the songs, I know I deal with that all the time with my students....what I do is every once in a while I teach them a song fingerstyle like the Beatles song Yesterday, or Claptons Tears In Heaven, that seems to keep them satiflied for a while while their learning the correct way to play music....it can become very boring for some people while their laying down the important foundations of musicianship, and this seems to keep them happy, when they do work on a piece like Yesterday they see for themselves how much they still have to learn. By saying that your getting to far ahead of yourself I know exactly what she/he is talking about...all young people are in a big hurry to play the music and skip the foundations,
once in a while I do let a kid do what he wants and then he see's for himself that he doesn't know as much as he thouht that he did and we go back to where we let off !!!!!!!! Get this book to see if you know as much as you think you do, " The Very Best Of Fingerstyle Guitar ", put out by Hal Leonard...this book has the two songs that I talked about, this book has the chords, lead, fingerstyle picking, and tab.....work on this to see if you really do know more then your teacher thinks, also this will keep you happy and you can still keep on with your lessons. If you want to hear this played the way that my students do, (first year students do) go on youtube and type in this : Peo Kindgren plays Yesterday.....he's a fabulous guitarist who plays like I teach using the fingers....he's a classical guitarist who plays everything from Bach to the Beatles, and the way he plays Yesterday is the way that it's written in the book that I told you about....well good luck to you, bye !!!!!!!

Hmm, if you don't respect your teacher, how re we to believe you will respect anyone else? You can get all of the music you will ever need or want from the Guitar School of Iceland, or Delcamp.net. (which seems to be unavailable today) Learning to play it however, will require time, discipline and possibly the help of that teacher you are disparaging! I'll post a few links below and you go make up with your teacher. I understand that you are impatient, but if you cannot respect your teacher, find a teacher that you can respect. Hope this helps.

I teach guitar and if my students want to take it to another level. I will push them to do it. When I started, I pushed myself to do techniques that were too advanced for me. Eventually, I mastered them.
So, go ahead and do your own thing . I never heard a teacher tell a student, HEY !!!! you are advancing too fast and the rest can't keep up. The worse that can happen is too put you in a higher level of teaching.
