Playing Violin will be easier for you to learn because you are a treble clef reader. However, if you have larger hands and want to learn bass clef, go with the cello. Marking the neck for finger positions is a good way to start, but try not to depend on them for too long. Learn to use your ear for intonation. This will also help you with your flute intonation.

Don't buy an instrument off of e-bay or any other site without first asking an expert if it is a good brand. There is a lot of crap out there and a bad instrument will always make you sound bad...no matter how much you practice.

Private lessons are the best way to start. Many music stores offer a few free lessons with the purchase or rental of an instrument.

Good luck and have fun!

Since you already know treble clef, I'd do violin.

Definately get a quality beginner instrument (nothing from online!) and get into lessons. Have your teacher use pinstriping to tape the neck of your violin.

I play both violin and flute--love them both, but each of them has a side and personality to them all its own that is totally enriching.

Good luck!
