I took lessons for several years, and one of the main things my instructor taught me was to breathe out before breathing in, even if you are almost out of breath. Practice holding notes for a very long time. A, low B-flat and the C above that work nicely for that exercise. When you start feeling like you're running out of air, don't stop! Keep holding it; you are able to hold notes and play phrases much longer than you think you can. As for your reed, only put about 1/4 of an inch in your mouth. When you're tonguing, touch the tip of your tongue to the very tip of the reed where there is the space between the two blades of reed. You will get a much cleaner sound that way. Sit up straight, don't rest your elbows on your stomach or chest, and don't use the back of the chair (even during resting). Only flute players need the back of the chair! (My instructor used to tell me that.) Always play out, no matter what. I don't think there's ever been a time in which the oboes were told to quiet down. When there is a dynamic marking, play twice as loud as that marking. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at missronnirie@yahoo.com
